Thanks Paul, We can never forget this day. It was so horrid, but yet filled with such sacrifice. My husband just returned a few months ago from a year tour of duty in Tikrit, Iraq. I am glad he made it home. So many do not. Life is full of tragedy and things we can't understand, but it helps to be able to write it all down and find healing in the words. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful piece of your creative spirit again. Latorial www.latorial.com

Hi Paul, I know this is a late critique but I just have to comment on this piece. My son is a fire fighter who puts his life on the line to save others. A noble profession that is over-looked way too often. My husband was a police officer, so much of my life has been a constant state of anticipation for a phone call that would bring my world tumbling down. Also the form you used is unique to demonstrate the stairs those angles of mercy climbed to save those poor victums. Very well done! Peace...Marilyn

It has been three years since this tragedy has taken place and you have put forth a well constructed staircase in which these men and women climb in search of survivors ready to bring them home and in the process they too have given their lives so others may live........your words have indeed provided an image one holds within their mind and hopefully heart as well......the emotions involved three years ago remain today. Thank you for a tribute to our men and women who serve in many ways their country and fellow man and thank you for sharing this with us. God Bless, Claire I have a small pillow that I keep in my bedroom as a reminder of 9-11-00 and as you can see this is one year before the towers fell....still a reminder of life, my own life, in which I underwent open heart surgery. How ironic......still a day to never forget......

Dear Paul, Sometimes I just hate to guess at things - but I have decided that I can read your poem two ways, up from the bottom makes sense and down from the top makes sense. This subject is one of the saddest I see posted here - but I'm glad that everyone still remembers what happended that day - and pays tribute in this honorable way. I enjoyed your poem - the structure and content are both something you should be proud of having developed with your imagination. Good luck with this poem. DeniMari

Paul, this is a great reminder of what we owe those who put themselves on the line for the rest of us. I like the structure of the poem and the repetition then another, and another...it reminds me not just of the staircases but also the number of victims and the number of heroes who just kept climbing even though it was dangerous and they had to have known that people were going to die. Real heroes. Sandra
